Thurso South Substation, Caithness

Thurso South Substation, Caithness

Balfour Beatty / SSE

The construction of the Thurso South Substation is part of a wider project to strengthen the high voltage network in Caithness which involves replacing and upgrading the existing 132kV overhead line with new higher capacity infrastructure between the substations at Dounreay, Thurso and Mybster.  The increased network capacity will facilitate the transmission of renewable generation projects north of Beauly including onshore and offshore wind, marine and tidal generation.

Murform’s work includes 250 switchgear foundations, 8 gantry foundations, 2 supergrid transformer bunds, 2 auxiliary transformer bunds and various other reinforced concrete works.  All these works are being completed to tight deadlines without compromising the highest quality and safety standards.
